What is a yurt
A yurt is a round, portable structure whose origins are from Mongolia. For the nomadic tribes of Mongolia, yurts housed families and livestock as they migrated across the Mongolian countryside. The traditional yurt is constructed with portability in mind. Tribes are able to breakdown or erect their yurts in less than a day. A yurt is known also as a Üy (pronounced ooee), Ev, Ög, or Ger.

The modern yurts that are manufactured mostly in the US and UK generally use modern materials such as polyester and vinyl, and many use recycled materials. Many of these yurts are more permanent structures. This is not to say that ALL modern yurts are manufactured this way. Many build camping, traditional, wooden, and custom yurts with a myriad of different techniques and materials.

So, What Is A Yurt?

There are so many different kinds of yurts, that one starts to wonder what is a yurt? The one element you find in all yurts is the way the roof is designed. There is a center ring that rafters press against, and a perimeter ring they rest against (usually a cable or rope). This tension and compression model is the basis of what makes a yurt a yurt.
